I'm not dead just lacking motivation here sob sob sob
I needed motivation so I did it the Edward Elric way. Also I can’t draw anatomy and I”m terrible at everything. I DON’T DO ED JUSTICE I TRIED I’M SORRY
I tried to emulate the manga’s printed style, but technically the quote’s from Brotherhood, in the manga he DOES say something along those lines like “stand up and walk, keep moving forward. At least you have two legs to take you there”
AND THEN I HAD A LOT OF FEELS AND I STILL DO
A LOT OF EDWARD ELRIC FEELS. Because THAT was the precise moment I realized I loved Edward Elric and he was my favourite character. Technically it was actually when he was spitting out his juice in the first chapter that I decided that he was going to be my favourite character (and I was right), but I digress. I truly realized how heartbreaking Fullmetal Alchemist and Ed and Al’s tale was in that one quote.
Because you see, Ed was so intensely pissed (and an asshole) to Rose when they first met was because he both hated her weakness…and himself. Ed, who had to struggle with a crippled body, has never given up, and yet he sees a person who is perfectly healthy needing God as a crutch to move forward angered him. Also, it’s easy to see how much he despises himself for bringing this plight on to him and his little brother, and Ed definitely cannot blame fate or God for what happened to him. He only blames himself.
But the line “You’ve got two good legs so get up and use them” breaks my heart every single time that I’ve seen it. When you look at it from another point of view, it’s ridiculous that people with two good legs couldn’t plow forward…while a boy with one leg never gave up. Even broken and mained, Ed marched forward with an iron will. Because even with both legs, Rose never had Ed’s resolve, and I think this anger is what drove him to be so harsh towards her. It’s insulting towards him if you think about it. He’s thinking “how could you? How could you just sit here and give up with a perfectly healthy body, and I’m going on even with my maimed one?” and it just breaks my heart.
Edward Elric is amazing. At the age of 11, he lost his arm and leg, and his little brother. He joined the military at the age of 12. He burned down his own house so he wouldn’t be able to turn back. But what’s most amazing is that he never did shy away from the results of the human transmutation and said “the fault is mine, it’s all mine. It’s my fault we’re like this, it’s my fault Al’s body is gone, and I messed up. I messed up so I have to fix this, it’s my responsibility”. Like jeez, I know people with far less obligations that were far less mature and responsible than this kid. HECK EVEN IN THE STORY, we could see Marcoh running away from his mistakes, while Ed never did. Honestly, if people were more like Ed and were more responsible, imagine how much better the world would be.
Have I mentioned by the time the story begins he’s only fifteen?
I’M SORRY I’M RANTING I HAVE TOO MANY ED FEELS I LOVE MY ADORKABLE LITTLE IDIOT.
